Appliance repair
Dishwasher Repair Cost Calculator
Prices a dishwasher repair, where poor cleaning is usually not a fault.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus the part and the call-out. Dishwasher repairs centre on water movement: the drain pump, the circulation pump, the inlet valve, the float switch and the door seal, with control boards and door latches behind them. Access means pulling the machine out from under the counter and often disconnecting water and waste, which is a meaningful share of the labour on a built-in unit even for a simple part.
What moves the number
- Whether the complaint is a fault or a usage and water quality issue.
- Access, since an integrated machine has to come out to work on.
- Whether the leak is the door seal or the pump, which differ in cost.
- Hard water scale, which causes poor performance and shortens component life.
Where this one goes wrong
Poor cleaning is frequently not a broken machine. Blocked spray arm jets, a clogged filter, scale buildup, the wrong detergent or a loading pattern blocking the spray are all more common than a failed pump, and so is a water supply that is not hot enough. Check those before quoting a repair, because a customer who pays for a pump and still has cloudy glasses has not been helped. Scale is worth raising in hard water areas, since it reduces performance and shortens the life of the heating element and pumps, and regular descaling is cheaper than the repairs it prevents.
Before you quote
- Check filters, spray arms, detergent and loading before diagnosing a fault.
- Confirm the incoming water temperature.
- Raise scale and descaling in hard water areas.
Questions
About this calculator
My dishwasher is not cleaning properly. Is it broken?
Usually not. Blocked spray arm jets, a clogged filter, scale buildup, unsuitable detergent, overloading and water that is not hot enough are all more common than a mechanical fault. Those are worth eliminating before paying for a repair, because a new pump will not fix any of them.
Why does a small dishwasher part cost so much to fit?
Because the machine has to come out from under the counter, which usually means disconnecting the water supply, the waste and sometimes the electrical, and releasing it from the cabinetry. That access work is similar whatever the part, so a cheap component can still carry an hour or more of labour.
Does hard water damage a dishwasher?
It shortens component life and reduces performance by scaling the heating element, the spray arms and the pumps. In a hard water area regular descaling is worthwhile, and it is considerably cheaper than the element or pump replacement that scale eventually causes.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.4 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $115.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $85.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 1.4 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $115 |
| Parts and materials | $85 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $341 |
| Labour | $161 |
| Before tax | $341 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $341: $161 of labour, $85 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $58 | $261.20 |
| $86 | $300.40 |
| $115 example above | $341 |
| $173 | $422.20 |
| $230 | $502 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
