Credit Card Payoff Calculator
Works credit card payoff, where paying the minimum is the expensive path.
Result
Assumes a fixed payment and no new spending on the card. Adding purchases while paying it down extends the timeline substantially.
Get a Free Business AuditHow the calculation works
The balance, the rate and the payment produce the months to clear and the total interest. Because card interest compounds and minimum payments are set as a small percentage of the balance, paying the minimum extends the term enormously and the total interest can approach or exceed the original balance.
What moves the number
- Interest rate, which is high on most cards.
- Payment amount against the minimum.
- Whether new purchases are being added.
- Promotional rates and when they expire.
Where this one goes wrong
Any fixed payment above the minimum clears the balance dramatically faster than the minimum does, because the minimum falls as the balance does and the term stretches accordingly, so committing to a fixed amount rather than paying what is asked is the single most effective change. Continuing to use the card while paying it down defeats the arithmetic entirely, which is the practical obstacle rather than the maths.
Before you quote
- Pay a fixed amount rather than the shrinking minimum.
- Stop adding purchases while paying down a balance.
- Note when any promotional rate expires.
Questions
About this calculator
Why does paying the minimum take so long?
Because the minimum is a percentage of the balance, so it falls as the balance does and the term stretches accordingly. The total interest can approach or exceed the original balance, which is why a fixed payment is so much better.
What is the single most effective change?
Committing to a fixed payment above the minimum rather than paying what is asked each month. The balance then falls at a constant rate instead of a decelerating one, which shortens the term dramatically.
Does using the card while paying it down matter?
It defeats the arithmetic entirely, since new purchases replace the principal being cleared. That is the practical obstacle in card payoff rather than the maths, and it is why the calculation assumes no further spending.

How to use this calculator
- Card balance ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $8,500.
- APR (%). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 22.9%.
- Monthly payment ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $350.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to time to clear the balance, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Card balance | $8,500 |
| APR | 22.9% |
| Monthly payment | $350 |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Time to clear the balance main result | 2 yrs 9 mo |
| Total interest paid | $3,005 |
| Total paid | $11,505 |
| Interest in the first month | $162.21 |
Paying 350 a month clears it in 2 yrs 9 mo and costs $3,005 in interest.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only card balance, this is what happens to time to clear the balance. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Card balance ($) | Time to clear the balance |
|---|---|
| $4,250 | 1 yr 2 mo |
| $6,375 | 1 yr 11 mo |
| $8,500 example above | 2 yrs 9 mo |
| $12,750 | 5 yrs 3 mo |
| $17,000 | 11 yrs 7 mo |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
What each figure means
- Card balance ($)
- A money amount, starting at $8,500.
- APR (%)
- A percentage, between 0 and 100, starting at 22.9%.
- Monthly payment ($)
- A money amount, starting at $350.
What the results tell you
| Result | What it is |
|---|---|
| Time to clear the balance | The headline result. A number. |
| Total interest paid | A money figure. |
| Total paid | A money figure. |
| Interest in the first month | A money figure. |
Rates and terms move
Loan and interest figures assume the rate and term you enter hold for the whole period. Variable rates, fees rolled into the balance and early-repayment terms all change the real cost.
