About $572: $297 of labour, $180 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

What moves the number

  • Rotor type. Vented, drilled, slotted and coated rotors differ substantially in cost.
  • Whether the rotor is captive behind the hub, which turns a short job into a much longer one.
  • Corrosion between rotor and hub, which on older vehicles can take longer to separate than the rest of the job.

Where this one goes wrong

Quoting rotors without checking whether they are hub-captive. On some platforms the hub assembly has to come off to release the rotor, and that is a different job from the one you priced.

Questions

About this calculator

Is resurfacing rotors still worth doing?

Rarely on modern vehicles. Rotors are thinner than they once were and often have little material to remove, and the labour to machine them can approach the cost of new ones. Measure first and decide from the number.

Should rotors be replaced in pairs?

Across an axle, yes. Mismatched rotor condition side to side produces uneven braking, and the saving on one rotor is not worth the result.

What causes a pulsation after new rotors?

Most often a dirty or corroded hub face, which puts the new rotor out of true the moment it is bolted down. Cleaning the hub is a small step that prevents a large number of comebacks.

The formula

total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $572: $297 of labour, $180 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$68 $424.60
$101 $497.20
$135 example above $572
$203 $721.60
$270 $869

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
