Auto repair & detailing
Auto Repair Estimate Calculator
Turn an inspection into a written estimate, with the labour, parts and fees separated so the customer can see what they are agreeing to.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.
Get a Free Business AuditWhat moves the number
- How much of the job you have actually seen. An estimate written from a lift is a different document from one written in a car park.
- Parts lead time, which decides how long the vehicle is yours.
- Whether the estimate covers the fault only, or the fault plus what you found alongside it.
Where this one goes wrong
Estimates that do not say what they exclude. Fluids, alignment after suspension work, and diagnostic time already spent are the three most commonly assumed to be included.
Before you quote
- An expiry date, because parts pricing moves.
- Whether the price is fixed or an approximation, stated in plain words.
- What happens if the vehicle needs more work once it is apart.
Questions
About this calculator
Is an estimate binding?
It depends on the wording rather than the heading. A defined scope with a stated price reads as an offer even if you titled it an estimate. If the number is genuinely provisional, the document has to say so.
How long should an estimate stay valid?
Long enough for a considered decision and short enough that parts pricing has not moved under you. Put the date on the document and apply it.
Should options go on one estimate?
Yes, priced separately. A customer who can see the required repair and the recommended extras as distinct choices decides faster than one handed a single combined number.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 2.2 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $135 |
| Parts and materials | $180 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $572 |
| Labour | $297 |
| Before tax | $572 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $572: $297 of labour, $180 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $68 | $424.60 |
| $101 | $497.20 |
| $135 example above | $572 |
| $203 | $721.60 |
| $270 | $869 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
