Service lines rarely carry the same margin. Splitting them is the only way to see which part of the business is paying for the rest, which is frequently not the part that looks busiest.

What moves the number

  • Bay hours available, which is the hard ceiling on a fixed site.
  • Average service value, which moves with mix rather than with price rises alone.
  • Repeat rate, since a maintained vehicle returns and takes less time each visit.

Where this one goes wrong

Forecasting growth from more new customers. Detailing rewards retention heavily, because a maintained vehicle is quicker to service and returns predictably, and chasing new customers while losing existing ones is expensive.

Questions

About this calculator

What raises detailing revenue fastest?

Usually mix rather than volume. Moving customers from a wash to a maintenance plan, or from a maintenance detail to a protection service, raises revenue without needing more vehicles.

Are maintenance plans worth it?

They smooth the seasonal swing and the vehicles take less time each visit, which is worth more than the headline discount. Price them from the cost of delivery rather than from a percentage off.

How should capacity be measured?

In bay hours, not vehicles. A day of corrections and a day of washes are the same hours and very different vehicle counts.

How useful was this calculator?

Not rated yet. Yours would be the first.

The formula

revenue = jobs x average value; gross profit = revenue x margin

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only average value, this is what happens to repair revenue per month. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Average value ($)Repair revenue per month
$260 $7,280
$390 $10,920
$520 example above $14,560
$780 $21,840
$1,040 $29,120

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
