Unit conversion
Area Converter
Converts area, where the factor is the length factor squared.
Result
Conversions use exact internationally defined factors where one exists, so results are precise to the digits shown.

Area units convert by the square of the corresponding length factor, so a square foot is the square of the foot-to-metre factor in square metres rather than the factor itself. Using the linear factor on an area is the standard error and it produces a result wrong by a large multiple.
What moves the number
- The squared factor for the unit pair.
- Whether the figure is an area or a dimension.
- Land units, which have their own definitions.
- Precision required.
Where this one goes wrong
Applying a linear factor to an area is wrong by the factor itself, which means converting square feet to square metres using the length factor gives a figure roughly three times too large, and the error is large enough to be obvious once checked against a known reference. Square the factor. Land units are the other complication, since acres, hectares and the various historical land measures each have their own definitions that do not derive from a simple square.
Before you quote
- Square the length factor when converting area.
- Check the result against a known reference area.
- Use the specific definition for land units.
Questions
About this calculator
Why is the area factor not the same as the length factor?
Because area has two dimensions, so the factor is squared. Using the linear factor on an area gives a result wrong by the factor itself, which for feet to metres is roughly three times too large.
How large is an acre?
It has its own historical definition rather than deriving from a simple square of a length unit, as do hectares and the various regional land measures. Converting between them needs the specific factor rather than a derived one.
How do I check an area conversion?
Against something known: a square metre is a bit under eleven square feet, so a conversion producing a number in the wrong order of magnitude is spotted immediately. That sanity check catches the squared-factor error reliably.

How to use this calculator
- Value. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1,000.
- From. Enter your own figure; the page starts at Square feet.
- To. Enter your own figure; the page starts at Square metres.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to converted value, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value | 1,000 |
| From | Square feet |
| To | Square metres |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Converted value main result | 92.903 |
| Conversion factor | 0.092903 |
1,000 Square feet equals 92.903 Square metres.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only value, this is what happens to converted value. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Value | Converted value |
|---|---|
| 500 | 46.4515 |
| 750 | 69.6773 |
| 1,000 example above | 92.903 |
| 1,500 | 139.3546 |
| 2,000 | 185.8061 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
