Appliance repair
Stove Repair Cost Calculator
Prices a stove top repair, where most faults are at the igniter or the switch.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus the part and the call-out. Cooktop repairs are generally among the cheaper appliance jobs. On gas, the common faults are spark igniters and igniter modules, burner caps and heads clogged with spillage, and the gas valve or switch. On electric, it is the surface element and its switch on a coil top, or the element and control board on a radiant glass top. Induction is the exception, where the power board is the usual failure and it is expensive.
What moves the number
- Gas, electric coil, radiant glass or induction, which have different common faults.
- Whether the glass top is cracked, which is usually terminal economically.
- Spillage and cleaning, since clogged burners and switches cause many complaints.
- Part availability for the specific model.
Where this one goes wrong
A cracked glass cooktop is generally a replacement rather than a repair, because the glass is a major part and fitting it approaches the cost of a new unit, and a cracked top is also unsafe to use with an element beneath it. On gas, check cleaning before parts: spillage into a burner head or around an igniter causes clicking that will not light, uneven flames and burners that fail intermittently, and cleaning fixes it. One burner clicking continuously is often moisture or debris at a single igniter rather than a module failure. Any gas work involving the valve or supply is licensed in most places.
Before you quote
- Clean burner heads and igniters before replacing parts on a gas top.
- Treat a cracked glass top as unsafe to use and usually uneconomic to repair.
- Confirm licensing requirements for work on the gas valve or supply.
Questions
About this calculator
My gas burner clicks but won't light. What is it?
Often spillage or moisture around the igniter rather than a failed part. Cleaning the burner head and the igniter area fixes a large share of these complaints. If one burner clicks continuously while others work, debris at that igniter is the most likely cause.
Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?
The glass can be replaced but it is a major part, and the cost plus labour usually approaches a new appliance. A cracked top is also unsafe to continue using with a heating element beneath it, so it is normally a replacement decision rather than a repair.
Why are induction repairs more expensive?
Because the usual failure is the power board rather than a simple element or switch, and that board is a significant share of the appliance's value. Induction cooktops have fewer mechanical parts to fail, but the electronic failures that do occur are costly.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.4 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $115.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $85.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 1.4 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $115 |
| Parts and materials | $85 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $341 |
| Labour | $161 |
| Before tax | $341 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $341: $161 of labour, $85 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $58 | $261.20 |
| $86 | $300.40 |
| $115 example above | $341 |
| $173 | $422.20 |
| $230 | $502 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
