A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Hours times crew times rate, plus the part and the call-out. Ice maker faults are mostly about getting water in and ice out: the inlet valve, the supply line and its shut-off, a frozen fill tube, the ice maker module or motor, and the level arm or sensor. Those are modest parts with reasonable access. A standalone or under-counter ice machine is a different proposition, with its own refrigeration circuit, which brings sealed system considerations and higher costs.

What moves the number

  • Whether it is a fridge ice maker or a standalone machine with its own refrigeration.
  • Whether water is reaching the unit at all, which is the first thing to establish.
  • Whether the fill tube is frozen, which is common and cheap to resolve.
  • Water filter condition, since a clogged filter restricts flow enough to stop production.

Where this one goes wrong

Check the water supply before the ice maker. A closed or partly closed shut-off valve, a kinked supply line, a clogged water filter or a frozen fill tube will all stop ice production with nothing wrong with the ice maker itself, and the filter in particular is a consumable that customers forget. A frozen fill tube is worth knowing about because it recurs: it usually means the freezer is running colder than it should or the tube is positioned badly, so thawing it without finding the cause means a return visit. On standalone machines, scale and sanitation also affect production and are maintenance rather than repair.

Before you quote

  • Verify water is reaching the unit before diagnosing the ice maker.
  • Check the water filter, which is a commonly neglected consumable.
  • Find the cause of a frozen fill tube rather than just thawing it.

Questions

About this calculator

My ice maker stopped making ice. What should I check first?

The water supply. A partly closed shut-off valve, a kinked line, a clogged water filter or a frozen fill tube will each stop production with nothing wrong with the ice maker. The filter is the most commonly overlooked, since it is a consumable that needs periodic replacement.

Why does my fill tube keep freezing?

Usually because the freezer is running colder than it should, or the tube is poorly positioned so water sits in it. Thawing it clears the symptom and it will recur unless the cause is addressed, which is why a repeat freeze points at a temperature or positioning problem rather than the tube itself.

Are standalone ice machines more expensive to repair?

Generally yes, because they have their own refrigeration circuit rather than relying on the freezer, which brings sealed system considerations and certification requirements. They also need regular cleaning and descaling, and neglected maintenance accounts for a good share of their production problems.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$58 $261.20
$86 $300.40
$115 example above $341
$173 $422.20
$230 $502

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
