A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Aluminium is a panel system like vinyl, so the labour is largely accurate post setting and the material is the dominant cost. It does not rot, does not need painting beyond its factory finish, and is light to handle, which makes installation quick. Most aluminium fence is ornamental picket style, which passes wind and therefore loads posts much less than a solid fence, so posts can be lighter than a privacy fence of the same height.

What moves the number

  • Whether the fence is a pool barrier, which imposes specific dimensional and hardware requirements.
  • Grade of the system, since residential and commercial grades differ substantially in section thickness.
  • Whether the panels rack for slope, which most ornamental aluminium does within a limit.
  • Gate hardware, which for a pool has to be self-closing and self-latching.

Where this one goes wrong

If the fence encloses a pool it is a safety barrier and it is regulated. Requirements commonly include a minimum height, a maximum gap beneath, limits on openings so a small child cannot pass through, no horizontal members that provide a foothold on the outside, and gates that are self-closing and self-latching with the latch above a specified height and opening outward from the pool. Those exist because children drown in pools reached through inadequate fencing, and an ornamental fence that looks appropriate can fail several of them. Confirm the requirements in force locally and build to them rather than to the system's standard configuration.

Before you quote

  • Confirm pool barrier requirements before specifying height, spacing and gates.
  • Fit self-closing, self-latching gate hardware where a pool is enclosed.
  • Check the panels rack far enough for the slope, or plan to step them.

Questions

About this calculator

Can an aluminium fence be used as a pool fence?

Commonly yes, but it has to meet the barrier requirements rather than just look suitable. Minimum height, maximum gap under the fence, opening sizes a child cannot pass through, no exterior footholds, and self-closing self-latching gates are typical requirements. Confirm what applies locally before ordering.

Why does a pool gate need special hardware?

Because a gate left open defeats the whole barrier. Self-closing hinges and a self-latching latch, with the latch positioned out of a small child's reach and the gate swinging away from the pool, are the standard requirements. They exist because this is the failure mode in drowning incidents.

Is aluminium fencing strong enough?

For ornamental fencing, yes, and it does not rot or need painting. Systems come in different grades though, and the difference in section thickness between a light residential grade and a commercial one is real. For a pool barrier or anywhere it will take knocks, the heavier grade is worth it.

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total

$59 $3,275
$78 example above $3,655
$117 $4,435
$156 $5,215

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
