Why does compounding matter so much later on?

Growth is earned on previous growth. The final years add far more than the early ones, which is why starting sooner beats contributing more later.

Does compounding frequency make a big difference?

Less than most people expect. Moving from annual to daily compounding at 7% adds roughly a quarter of a percentage point of effective return. The rate and the time matter far more.

Is a 7% return realistic?
